OpenMediaVault planning tools
Start with the storage you need to keep, then work back to a disk layout and a machine that can support it. Use the calculator for capacity arithmetic and the guides below for the decisions its numbers cannot make.
OpenMediaVault RAID Capacity Calculator
Enter a drive count, equal drive size, protection level and assumed rebuild rate. Compare raw capacity with the estimate after parity and your selected reserve, in TB and TiB. Calculations run in your browser. The results are planning estimates; they do not inspect your NAS or measure its performance.
Turn the estimate into a storage plan
Check the OpenMediaVault system requirements before selecting the host. Then use the filesystem and shared-folder guide to connect the chosen disks to the services that will publish your files.
For a small board-based NAS, follow OpenMediaVault on a Raspberry Pi for the installation, power and USB-storage checklist. A single data disk needs its own backup plan; the calculator's parity layouts assume multiple data drives.
